The amount of content for the GZDoom engine is quite astounding. During Beta Testing our team tried as many combinations, looking for what worked best in VR.
At the end we tallied up everyone's favourite mods to produce this list. This is by no means a comprehensive guide, but it's a great starting point if you are unfamiliar with Doom modifications/
All of the mentioned mods are available to download via the QuestZDoom Launcher. You can find notes regarding the best performance settings within the Launcehr.
A big thank you once again to our dedicated beta testers for help compiling this list.
This is what I show friends to let them know what QuestZDoom is all about. Action, Gore, great map design and a soundtrack that blows your mind. Maps of Chaos in combination with Meatgrinder is just so good. Experience the original iD maps, but turned up to 11.

Widely considered to be the true sequel to Doom II. Doom 64 was originally released for the Nintendo 64. This is a fan recreation. The goal of the project is to be mostly accurate to the original game as well as add very minor improvements for that extra bit of polish. Think of this mod as being an enhanced version of Doom 64.
FreeDoom Phase 2 + Doom 64: Retribution + Doom 64 OGG Music Files + Doom 64 3D VR Weapons + Bolognese Brutal Mod
Enjoy escaping a mad house torture chamber? Neither do we, but this mod needs to be played! Combine with Brutal Doom and let the blood fly.
Doom 2 + Unloved + Brutal Doom + 3D VR Brutal Doom Weapons + High Res Textures Lite + Sounds Remastered

Ever wondered what would happen in Fallout and Doom had a baby? It would be called Ashes 2063! The lack of VR weapons is more than made up for by great performance and really fun action.
Make sure you add the Bolognese mod!
FreeDoom Phase 2 + Ashes 2063 + Ashes 2063: Textures and Weapons + Captain J's Wasted Ashes SFX + Bolognese
Note: This one doesn’t have VR weapons. Play with the Laser Sight on.
An excellent tribute to the original Wolfenstein. Don’t let the old skool graphics fool you. Playing this brutalised is a blast. Achtung! Schutzstaffel!
FreeDoom Phase 2 + Brutal wolfenstein + Brutal Wolfenstein HD Textures
Doom II + Brutal wolfenstein + Brutal Wolfenstein HD Textures
If you don't know HacX yet, you should definitely check it out. Formerly marketed as a licensed add-on for Doom, it is now freely available and one of the most ingenious and futuristic games that use the Doom engine. With the GFX Overhaul and VR weapons you take the game to a whole new level.
HacX + HacX GFX Overhaul + HacX VR Weapons
John Romero, who was one of the creators of the original Doom, recently revisited the franchise creating a sequel to Ultimate Doom. Sigil takes place after the episode "thy flesh consumed" and before Doom II. Consider yourself forewarned: this is old skool difficulty! Note: When loading this it will appear as a new episode, not as the whole game. Make sure you select the correct episode to play.
FreeDoom + SIGIL + Brutal Doom + Brutal Doom 3d Weapons + AI Textures + Sounds Remastered
Doom I + SIGIL + Brutal Doom + Brutal Doom 3d Weapons + High Res Textures Light + Remastered Sounds

You can also drop Duke Nukem over most Core Games / Map Pack to experience the same levels with Duke textures and Enemies. I.e:

Like being scared? Been waiting for a chance to be impregnated by a Xenomorph? Experience Aliens: Eradication. The Single Player Missions are a bit too intensive for the Quest. However the mod allows Aliens to be dropped on any map pack or game. We recommend the following as an excellent mix of atmosphere, however do try them all out and let us know what works best.
FreeDoom Phase 2 + Dark Moon + Alien: Textures and Monsters
Doom II + Dark Moon + Alien: Textures and Monsters
